portrait

Here is number 4 of 4 self portraits I tried this week. I like to do a couple self portraits every once in a while, it is pretty interesting to step back and look at how I see myself. Most of the time I see myself as hulk, which explains this...

A little fun.

Hello, you may remember a post a while back about a project that I decided to stop working on because of mounting technical issues, Well I cut together a fun little clip from that thing just to prove that the "polar bear fighting" cartoon really does exist in some, albeit unfinished form. In this scene "Scooter" has discovered a polar bear cave and waits for it to emerge, unaware that polar bears have magic powers...

Painting in the park on a sunny day.

Here is my first plein aire painting of the summer, many million more to come!

older painting

Here is a painting I did for a class called Craziness and creativity. It is a visual interpretation on the Novel "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte. I can't remember if I posted this yet but if not enjoy!

"Becky pose #2"

Here is a plein air painting from saturday. After about 2 hours of sketching I finally liked a drawing enough to paint. After the drawing was acceptable I spent another 2 hours bringing the painting to this point. I am pretty happy with it.

commissioned painting!

This is oil on canvas 18 inches by 24 inches. I really like this one, I hate to see it go but a friend of mine actually "Commissioned" this for a little dough. I really started to enjoy working on this one.

Must Paint.

I need to be painting more than once a week. I have been stressed out of my gourd-melon for the past week and I am finally starting to get a grip again. So here is a full update; I canceled the Polar bear cartoon that I was pretty close to finishing, the problem was that I had to look the project in the face every time i wanted to work on it and know that I can do better. A lot of it was just plain wrong, bad rigs, lazy animation, confusing story that kept pulling itself in different directions. Bleh no thanks. Ten weeks of working on that and I decided to just forget it and write it off as a learning experience.
I am currently working on a new cartoon that should be about a minute long, I say it "should" because I am trying to take the time in the pre-production phase to really plan it out so everything about the cartoon comes out closer to what I really had in mind for it. Without writing a novel I will say that it is a commercial for a device that lifts up overweight people and drags them throughout their homes. It's called the "In-Home-Hook-ME-UP!" It will focus on the device itself but the overweight character "Scooter" is where a lot of the comedy will come from.
The script is in it's second draft, Storyboards are in their second draft as well, Designs for Scooter and the device will be done and ready to finalize by the end of this week. I am writing this all out to try and light a more intense fire under my ass and I think it's working. I cant wait to put all this together knowing it was done correctly, (or at least a hell of a lot better than the last one).
Oh yeah, here is a painting from Saturday afternoon Painting sessions, this one clocked in at just under 4 hours.

World of Warcraft Instrument Design

So this project is for Concept Design class. It was real slow goon for a good week or so, but I found some stride, This is all 100% digital paint, and the most important thing is that I HAD FUN! I blasted some heavy metal music to start drawing and the music I was listening to i ended up just whistling to myself during the paint process! FUN!

PNCA figure drawing

so here are a few figure drawings from this evening, The model was better than your average poser, the early gestures she came up with were full of twists and arcs and movement. To explain the slightly toned drawing, I figured I would give my old bamboo pen and tablet one last go and see if i could stand using it. the answer is no, no I cannot stand using that hunk of junk, no pressure sensitivity, tiny screen coverage and absolutely zero mark recognition, basically any mark you make on the pad comes up on the screen as an angular fart. Side note; I dig red hair.

IT has been too long.

HEre is a group of scans from my "trip" to starbucks today. I started with a warm up couple of drawings, lines, ellipses, and some actual looking at what was in front of me. Then I move on to a little more of what i see. I think i am starting to understand what the fundamentals actually teach, you make a stroke on the page over and over and make your muscles remember that stroke. Then, after having these line marks or strokes buried so deep in your memory and habits that you can make these lines without looking at the page. You literally Draw what you see and its not just a copy. The third picture took an hour i think.

I was taking a moment to sit back and see what I had done and get another huge cup of coffee,(medium). Before I am able to gather myself enough to stand a woman named Spring pulled up next to my seat. She started talking to me about my drawing. I had a difficult time accepting the compliments. She asked who it was in the picture and why i chose to draw her out of all things. I said, "She was in front of me and probably wouldn't notice that I was drawing her." Spring tells me I should absolutely go and show her. So next, after plenty of insisting, I was forced into showing this stranger a drawing i made of her. Linda May was sitting with two other friends, Paul and Dorothy who were not included in the picture. They stopped talking and drinking coffee and all of them look over my work. The woman I drew looks up at me and wants to keep it. I politely say no to that Idea so now she asks first and then begins to write on the back of the sketch.
